Teachers, don't feel that you have to do  all of the  activities and in the manner so described. Feel free to personalize the lessons. If you discover a great resource, please email me so that I can share it with everyone.

Fair Use and Copyrights

This is a major concern in our electronic society. As a classroom teacher we must begin to teach students to do what is right. For the purpose of projects including  PowerPoint, posters and brochures I allow my students to copy images, graphs and charts from the Internet. They must include proper citation. Without proper citation, the grade suffers greatly. I do not allow them to use music however.

When using text, I have two simple procedures. (1) Write the document for an average 3rd - 5th grader. In each case text must be brought down to readers level. (2) I allow my students to copy 6 consecutive words without citation. Beyond 6, there must be a citation. Both methods have been successful in teaching students what is “fair use” and what is infringement.

Visualizing the Richter Scale

If magnitude was being represented by balls; a magnitude 1 quake would be a marble, a magnitude 3 quake would be a  golf ball, magnitude 4 would be a baseball and magnitude 5 will be a soccer ball!

Quake!
 A Jeopardy-type game

This game is played a lot like Jeopardy. If you are going to use the game, make sure you lead the students to the questions. You could give them the questions or answers to prior to the game. You may also edit the game and change the questions to suit your needs.

It is best to 'save' the game to your hard drive. It plays much faster!

This game is a modification of Multi-Q: A Review Game, located at http://www.esu5.org/techteacher/sampleactivities/multiq/blankgame.ppt. It is a board game that anyone can modify. Students can also use the template to create their own activities.

Note: The Shake, Rattle and Roll page only shakes 99% of the time. You may also get an 'error on page' message, but it is not important.
